Cavity Drain Membrane Installation in Hale

The project

The property is located on Park Road in Hale and the client wanted to create a gym, cinema room and utility room in the basement, which would include a treadmill, weights and other heavy equipment. Our members regularly work with other contractors, and in this instance the basement was excavated and underpinned by a specialist underpinning contractor to create extra head height and enable the use of the treat mill and lifting weights.

Once this was complete, our team was commissioned to coat the walls with waterproofing slurry. This consisted of two coats of Koster NB 1 to further reduce the risk of water ingress into the basement. This slurry system is designed to seal against ground moisture as well as pressurised and non-pressurised water, plus it’s highly resistant to abrasion, chemicals and sulphates. This provides a reliable waterproof seal and prevents groundwater from percolating upwards, effectively reducing water ingress.

The next phase was the installation of a cavity drain membrane, with our team opting for a hybrid system using the Delta 129 system and drainage channels.

Additional considerations

At the start of the project, there were high volumes of free-flowing water that had to be continuously pumped and the resultant debris removed. To achieve this, we used a twin pump system due to the size of the basement, which kept the water levels down for safe working with electrical equipment.

The existing mortar required repairs in order to ensure a solid base, so Koster Repair Mortar Plus was used due to it being of a very high quality, setting very quickly, and creating a watertight seal. The ceilings were also three metres high, so aluminium towers were used to reach the full height of the walls.

Due to the underpinning and the solid floor being fitted, it wasn’t possible to fit recesses for the channels. Instead, a channel aid was installed to ensure effective waterproofing.
